In 2021, Sony and Samsung Electronics came first and second in the camera image sensor (CIS) market. Competition is expected to intensify in 2022 as the gap between the two market leaders has narrowed.
According to a report released by Counterpoint Research on Feb. 23, sales of CIS are expected to reach $21.9 billion (about 26.3 trillion won) in 2022, an increase of 7% from 2021. mobiles are expected to account for 71.4% of all CIS sales.
Sony is the biggest supplier of CIS, especially those with large pixels. Counterpoint Research predicts that Sony’s sales in the CIS will increase by 3% in 2022 compared to the previous year and will represent 39.1% of the global market.
Samsung Electronics is expected to rank second with a 24.9% share. It increases its competitiveness by providing ultra-high resolution CIS for medium and high definition smartphones.
Sony previously accounted for more than 40% of the CIS market, while Samsung Electronics held just over 20%. In 2022, the gap between Samsung Electronics and Sony is expected to narrow as the former will aggressively increase its CIS production capacity. Meanwhile, SK Hynix is expected to take sixth place with a 3.6% share.
